Drive through the dusty streets of the northern suburbs of Bucharest.
The surface is rough and cracked. A nail sticking out bent by traffic. The pavement is overgrown with weeds and the parking lot is littered with garbage.
There’s a small warehouse-like thing on one side of the road, marked by the guard’s door. From the outside it looks like a pretty dirty building.
But it’s no longer a warehouse. This is the home of the Tate brothers, located a short distance from the city’s airport runway, in what appears to be a scrubland. But when you look through the bars at the gate, you see a whole other world.
Towering statues in the forecourt, a pool, the word “Tate” scrolled large on two walls and, most notably, four expensive cars parked on the back wall. Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce.
Two of them have British personal plates starting with T8 from Tate. I checked later and found out that one of them was months behind his MoT.
This is the house that has appeared in various short films made by Andrew Tate, celebrates his extravagant lifestyle. It’s quiet now.
There are probably some guards on the prowl to keep an eye on the expensive cars and make sure no one breaks into the house.
I ring the bell, but no one answers. The house and its contents were seized as part of the Romanian government’s prosecution of the brothers. If they are finally found guilty, all these things can be sold to pay the costs and compensation.
It is here that Mr. and Mrs. Tates allegedly organized a scheme to lure women to Romania and force them to work on porn webcams.
It is also here that Andrew Tate laid the foundation for his Hustlers University business, which is said to be a pyramid scheme and a machine for strengthening his own online presence.
Neighbors said they saw a lot going in and out of their homes. One described the Tates family using a Romanian word loosely translated as “cart dealer.”
Another said they were unpopular during the summer when cars revved up at night while the rest of the block tried to sleep with the windows open.
Others, however, did not outright comment. I spoke to many people in the area, but few of them wanted to talk about my notorious neighbor. Allegations containing the term “organized crime” often tend to do so.
When they were arrested, the allegations seemed insane. The brothers are accused not only of breaking the law, but of engaging in truly heinous acts.
Despite the gruesome precedents of recent years, it still somehow seems disconcerting to find a famous character associated with such a horrific act. Deny.
But now that the dust has settled, the case feels more real and tangible. To prove that the wheels of justice are turning, we are looming from their home into the middle of Bucharest. Moved to the Court of Appeals.
And it was there that the Tate brothers lost their appeal against their detention and property seizure.
The two spoke alongside two other defendants, Alexandra Luana Radu and Georgiana Nagel, during a closed-door hearing that lasted more than five hours.
But it had no effect. Their lawyers argued that there was little evidence against them and no reason to think they fled the country. supported the decision of
It is very likely that prosecutors will seek to extend that detention in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, in that monotonous street of Voluntari, the mansion of the curious Tate empties. A sign of a suspended empire, at least for the time being.
