San Leandro, California (KGO) — Police say the man suspected of murdering and robbing an armored truck guard he worked with confessed to the crime.

Jon Mendes, 60, is a veteran who was described as having an infectious personality on a GoFundMe page his family created last month. He was shot dead on the campus of Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro in September when he was working as a security guard on GardaWorld’s armored truck. His truck was also robbed.

“With a gross lack of respect for humanity, this man probably died while doing his job for thousands of dollars,” said Michael Reininger, a former San Jose police officer and security consultant.

San Leandro police confirmed Thursday that suspect Akbar Bey is in custody and will be charged with murder. As for how the arrest took place, investigators received information from a security firm that Bey had previously worked for them. In fact, Bay worked with the victim for five days and was familiar with the route. .

With the help of surveillance video, phone records, and the FBI, police tracked Bay to his home in Oakland through an associate he believed was with him during the killing and robbery.

According to court documents, he owned a gold 2004 Porsche. Security firm management told investigators it was “suspicious that Bey had a Porsche and a cell phone after the money was stolen in this robbery and murder.”

A search warrant was issued to Bay’s residence in Oakland on Wednesday. Moments later, police say Bay made a full confession. During the search, detectives found evidence that it was used during a robbery inside Bay’s residence.

“But again, there may be two or three people involved. They took human lives for no good reason,” Leininger said.

This case has links to San Leandro, Oakland, and Vacaville. Police are looking for additional suspects, accomplices and witnesses. The former officer we spoke with said he should be credited to the San Leandro Police Department for obtaining his confession and obtaining it quickly.
