A suspect was arrested early Monday morning in connection with the stabbing of a hotel security guard and a 70-year-old pedestrian in two separate incidents, police said.
At about 5:30 am, police were called about a man armed with a knife on Columbia Street near C Street.
The first victim was a security guard at the Westin Hotel on West Broadway near Columbia. A police sergeant said he was stabbed in his chest and face during a standoff in the hotel’s loading dock area. Eduardo Lopez. After stabbing, the assailant ran off.
Shortly after, a second victim, a 70-year-old man, was stabbed in the arm and back while walking near the intersection of C and State Streets, Lopez said.
In at least one of those incidents, the perpetrators attempted to rob the victim, Lopez said.
Both victims suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and were taken to hospital, he said.
Lopez said the suspect was taken into custody just before 5:45 a.m. and arrested after being identified on the street. Police are looking for surveillance video from nearby businesses, he said.
